Thoughts about essays, and fashion meme
I've been reading Harry Potter essays like crazy ever since Half-Blood Prince came out. In my searches, I found this collection of essays by "Elkins" of the Yahoo group "HP for Grownups." Actually they're posts to the group rather than essays. Though I disagree with a lot of what Elkins says, her essays are certainly thought-provoking. This page led me to subscribe to the group so I could read the archives (no time to participate, alas), but it also got me thinking.

I've always loved reading essays in other people's journals but have never been sure how to go about doing them in my own. It seems like all the ones I see are part of some huge ongoing conversation which I've never managed to hook into. It also seems like I never have time to sit down and write them on my own. But then I realized--that's not actually true! I write tons of essays and thoughts, interesting ones (or so I like to think), but they're generally posts to message boards or mailing lists, or else they're part of private email conversations. So I think I'm going to start going through the backlog of stuff I've written in the past, especially stuff that went to closed archives or is otherwise hard to access, and repost them here in hopes that some of you may find them of interest. I have loads of essays on Jane Austen, some Tolkien, probably some random other stuff too; I'll just have to see what I find.

Meanwhile, here's may answer to the fashion meme which I snagged from [info]eldrene and [info]cadiliniel.

Brainy Student
58% Tastefulness, 58% Originality, 42% Deliberateness, 9% Sexiness
[Tasteful Original Random Prissy]

Your style is classic but not glamorous. You don't concentrate on clothes an awful lot, preferring to spend your time on more interesting matters. You don't want to look like everyone else and your probably take care to have a unique element or two in your outfits, just to emphasize your personality, but, on the other hand, you don't need too much attention paid to your looks. Believe it or not, fashion says some things about character. You're probably quite an intellectual and somewhat reserved. But your style is not bad.

The opposite style from yours is Sex Bomb [Flamboyant Conventional Deliberate Sexy].

Heh. They forgot to ask "what's the difference between what you know and how you dress". I KNOW a lot more about clothes than I APPLY thanks to the costume design background... and this definitely isn't how I'd describe how I show up to a lot of places! For one thing, I've got much better trained taste than I care to spend the money to match... ^^;;;

Office Master

74% Tastefulness, 41% Originality, 52% Deliberateness, 27% Sexiness

[Tasteful Conventional Deliberate Prissy]

Your style is professional. Your clothes always fit the situation and
you probably never offend people by, say, wearing pink to a funeral.
You just know what becomes. You don't like extravagance too much and
you're not accidental. Your well chosen, stylish outfits communicate
that you're a serious person. Following classic rules about dressing,
you make sure that no one would call you flashy and many people admire
your calm, composed look.

Yeah, I know what you mean, although in my case, I think I came out with a pretty accurate picture of how I really do dress. I'm sure I could be an Office Master if I absolutely had to, and had the money--but I'd hate it.

Hi there Cress,

I am looking forward to these essays. Hope you have one or two on Harry Potter by now. Elkins rocks! ... but she overanalyzes a bit. Why does she think Draco is necessarily going to be kilt off? I didn't pick up any textual clues. Did you???

Try swythyw on hp_essays LJ community. She (he?) has some interesting teories. And thanks so much for asking about my well-being.

Goody! I'll try to hunt one up and post it soon.

Hope you have one or two on Harry Potter by now.

I doubt I have anything HP-related "in the can," as most of the stuff I wrote about Harry Potter vanished long ago along with the Amazon.com board where I posted it. It was all from pre-Goblet of Fire anyway. But maybe I'll find the time and energy to write something new one of these days!

Elkins rocks! ... but she overanalyzes a bit.

That's a hilarious comment, given the title of her site! But I know what you mean. I itch to point out some holes that I can see in some of her arguments--but alas, it seems she is no longer reachable, and it would be pretty obnoxious anyway to track her down three years later to explain why I think she's wrong about Crouch's Greying Hair. (I save that approach for people who write nasty things about Faramir! >:-D )

Why does she think Draco is necessarily going to be kilt off? I didn't pick up any textual clues. Did you???

No, but it's hard to go back to remembering how things looked before Order of the Phoenix came out. I suppose the theory might have made more sense at the time she posted it. And I suppose Draco still could be killed off in Book 7, but I'm not really expecting it.

Thanks for the tip! I'm almost done with Elkins' stuff, so I'm going to need some new essayists soon!

And thanks so much for asking about my well-being.

We're all relieved to hear that you're all right. Come back and join us on BoG soon!
